Kentucky Trucker 15 KyTrucking.net leadership insight to Amazon’s Global Team. Marty Ranck, Battalion Chief for the Fairfax County, Virginia. Fire and Hazardous Materials Response also served on the panel. Chief Ranck is responsible for one of the most densely populated areas in the U.S. as it correlates to pipeline farms, fuel loading depots, and seaports. The remaining panelist was Dr. David Guess, EVP of Safety and HR from Usher Transport, Inc. Dr. Guess subsequently serves as the Kentucky Trucking Associa- tion’s Chairman of the Board. Dr. Guess was contacted to serve on this inaugu- ral panel as a result of his industry involvement over the past twenty years as well as his research within the organizational development and leadership arena in the transportation industry. The panelists were each asked to expound on five key components to the ALDP event. Those five were: 1. What are some of the unique leadership chal- lenges, both anticipated and unanticipated, each of you have faced? 2. What are the leadership tenets you find most compelling? 3. Considering the intricacies involved navigating logistical, political, budgetary, and public quan- daries, how can one maintain a broad perspective without getting mired in the details? 4. Where do you feel our participants should focus their efforts on their leadership journey? 5. What are the future challenges you believe will need to be addressed in transportation leadership? The event was held in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Department of Transportation headquarters. Any- one who has ever visited the D.C. area and walked by the USDOT building in the Navy Yards district will certainly recall how vast this property is and the level of security protecting it. Dr. Guess encourages any of our association’s members to try and visit this facility at least once during your transportation career; it’s remarkably impressive.
